Crypto claims to be inclusive. Not for visually impaired, as it turns out

Image
Crypto, with its promise of financial inclusivity, ironically remains largely inaccessible to the blind and visually impaired. In 2017, Bitcoin.com published an interview with Craig McGee, a blind Bitcoin (BTC) enthusiast from the UK. Born with Norrie disease, a genetic disorder, he faced unique obstacles in his Bitcoin endeavors. “The biggest hurdle for the blind is accessibility,” Craig explained. “Most of the wallets are difficult to use, and the QT client interface doesn’t work too well with a screen reader. So I have to do most things with the debug console, and I have to use the ‘help’ command to remind me of some of the commands. Some wallets are even worse as the menus are not read out by the reader so I can’t get them to debug. “ In 2024, this story still isn’t unique to Craig; it’s a shared experience among many of the 43 million blind and 295 million severely visually impaired individuals worldwide. Their journey in the digital finan...

The UN report highlighted: “A 400% increase in Bitcoin’s price from 2021 to 2022 triggered a 140% increase in the energy consumption of the worldwide Bitcoin mining network.” At the time, fossil energy sources accounted for 67% of the electricity generated for Bitcoin mining. However, crypto entrepreneurs have ...

Binance freezes Hamas-linked accounts after Israeli request

Image
The freeze does not affect Binance accounts owned by ordinary Palestinian civilians. Crypto exchange Binance has frozen accounts linked to Hamas militants as per requests from Israeli law enforcement. According to an Oct. 10 WeChat post by Yi He, the exchange’s co-founder, the freeze is targeted toward Hamas and not the people of Palestine. As stated by He: “Hamas is a designated terrorist organization by the United Nations. Therefore, any organization, including banks and trading platforms, will need to cooperate on the receipt of freeze requests. This is not something Binance can decide on its own.“ Yi He further explained that no trading platforms can refuse such requests: “Palestine has an organized government. Hamas is a local militant group. They kill civilians; that’s the problem. Hamas is not Palestine; the freeze is targeted towards Hamas, not Palestine.“ Earlier on Oct. 10, local news outlet Calcalist reported that Israeli officials froze the crypto accounts of Hamas mili...

Wirex taps ZK-proofs for non-custodial crypto debit card issuance

Wirex first launched its crypto debit card in 2015 and currently claims over six million customers. Crypto payment service provider Wirex announced the launch of a zero-knowledge proofs -based non -custodial crypto debit card service called W-Pay. Wirex’s new decentralized solution utilizes Zero-Knowledge technology and is built on Polygon's Chain Development Kit (CDK), promising increased scalability and security. Polygon CDK has been built with ZK proofs in focus as it enables companies and users to build their own ZK-powered Layer 2 rail. ZK-proofs-based scalability solution has become quite popular in the crypto space as the zero-knowledge protocol allows one party to convince another party that something is true without disclosing anything other than the fact that the claim in question is true. Over time, Ethreum and the likes of Polygon have seen the most development related to ZK-proofs. W-Pay offers a range of ground-breaking features that enable non-custodial wallets ...

CBDC frameworks must guard user privacy, monetary freedom of choice - BIS chief

BIS general manager Agustín Carstens stresses the importance of legal frameworks that protect CBDC user privacy and maintain monetary freedom of choice. Legal framework s that ensure that user privacy and the freedom to choose between central bank digital currencies and other forms of money will be key in driving CDBC adoption, according to the head of the Bank of International Settlements. Speaking at the BIS Innovation Hub conference in Switzerland on Sept. 27, BIS general manager Agustín Carstens stressed that legal frameworks remain a key consideration in the development and proliferation of CBDCs around the world: “Most fundamentally, the legitimacy of a CBDC will be derived from the legal authority of the central bank to issue it. That authority needs to be firmly grounded in the law.” He added that different countries' laws specify what types of money their central bank can issue, which typically includes physical cash as well as credit balances on current and reserve ac...

AI has an energy problem — Blockchain is here to help

Image
As AI and cloud computing become more popular, their environmental footprint is bound to grow. However, blockchain can help make these technologies more sustainable. As the meteoric growth of AI and cloud computing takes an unspoken toll on the environment, blockchain-based distributed networks like CUDOS can create a sustainable future for AI. In the past, Bitcoin (BTC) was targeted because of its high electricity usage and its consequent environmental impact. It took the combined effort of the mining industry and Bitcoin advocates to kick off numerous renewable energy initiatives, which resulted in the share of “green energy ” in the Bitcoin mining industry growing to over 58%. As Bitcoin carved a sustainable path into the future for itself, another technology started causing qualms in parallel with its explosive growth — artificial intelligence (AI). Sure, it’s fun to ask trading advice from ChatGPT or order a funny portrait of a president on Midjourney, but AI relies on countless...

Crypto winter presents an opportunity amid chaos, says asset group exec

Alex Tapscott told Cointelegraph that bear markets lead to great ideas being formed and new businesses being built. Bear markets often result in investors showing extreme fear in tools that measure the market’s sentiments. Tapscott highlighted that it's essential to look beyond the market's prices and see the foundations that are being laid. Tapscott explained that: “Crypto winters are always the best time to drill down on these core concepts, do the work and build for the future. The last Bitcoin: What will happen once all BTC are mined?

Image
According to some experts, miners will always be essential to the Bitcoin ecosystem, even after mining the last coins. Satoshi Nakamoto mined the genesis block on Jan. 3, 2009, minting the first 50 Bitcoin (BTC) in history and kicking off what would become a billion-dollar industry centered around mining crypto. However, with a cap on Bitcoin supply, the fate of miners after the last coins are issued is unclear.  Bitcoin is created through mining, a process involving computer hardware to solve complex mathematical problems and verify transactions on the blockchain network. For their efforts, miners are rewarded with a predeter mined amount of BTC for each block of transactions. According to the Blockchain Council, more than 19 million BTC has been awarded to miners in block rewards, and according to Nakamoto’s white paper, only 21 million are available. Once this cap is reached, miners will no longer receive rewards for verifying transactions. Speaking to Cointelegraph, Nick Hansen,...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr vows to back US dollar with Bitcoin if elected president

RFK Jr. said he will use Bitcoin to stabilize the U.S. dollar as well as make Bitcoin profits exempt from capital gains tax. Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has promised to progressively back the United States dollar with Bitcoin (BTC) if he is elected president.  Speaking at a July 19 Heal-the-Divide PAC event, Kennedy claimed that backing the U.S. dollar with what he called "hard currency," including gold, silver, platinum or Bitcoin, could help to re-stabilize the American economy. "Backing dollars and U.S. debt obligations with hard assets could help restore strength back to the dollar, rein in inflation and usher in a new era of American financial stability, peace and prosperity.” Kennedy explained the process would be gradual and depending on the plan’s success he’d adjust the amount of backing for the dollar. “My plan would be to start very, very small, perhaps 1% of issued T-bills would be backed by hard currency, by gold, silver platinu...
