ASEAN Announces They Are Not Giving Up the US Dollar

The ASEAN Secretariat officially announced that the alliance is not abandoning the US dollar for trade. Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn told AFP that ASEAN is not “giving up dollars” to mitigate risks emerging from Trump’s tariffs. The statement comes after the alliance discussed various de-dollarization plans at the 2023 summit. The bloc pushed local currency settlements for cross-border transactions to avoid using the US dollar for payments. However, ASEAN has now taken a U-turn and confirmed that it will use the US dollar for trade and transactions. While the bloc agreed that they prioritize local currencies, the USD will also be used for trade. China is mulling the release of yuan-backed stablecoins to boost the global use of its currency, according to a report from Reuters. Citing unnamed sources “familiar with the matter,” Reuters says China is in the middle of a major pivot in its stance on digital assets. The sources – who asked not to be named because they’re not supposed to be talking to the media – say that China’s State Council will review and then potentially approve a roadmap later this month for launching the new product and working to catch up with the US on stablecoins. Details of the plan are expected to be publicly revealed in the coming weeks. Nigeria has called on BRICS to switch to trading in local currencies and refrain from using the US dollar for cross-border transactions. During a meeting at the BRICS trade forum held in Brazil, Nigeria’s House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Wole Oke, said that the alliance must begin investing in each other’s economy to maintain equal economic stability for all.
