Coinbase spends $17k per day to protect Brian Armstrong from tequila

Coinbase is spending over $6 million annually on Brian Armstrong’s personal security, which despite having access to an X-ray scanner, wrongly called the bomb squad over a bottle of tequila. Last weekend, the crypto exchange CEO revealed his security team scanned a package after it was dropped off by a plain van. They decided to call in the bomb squad, however soon discovered it was just a bottle of tequila gifted by the All-In podcast. The battery and wires that spooked the security team were powering the box’s interior lighting.  A white unmarked van pulled up to my house yesterday and dropped off a mysterious package. (I was out of town) My security team x-rayed it and it had a battery, wires, and cylinder inside. The Bomb Squad was called in to investigate. In the end they discovered it was a gift… pic.twitter.com/sXBOf9fxor — Brian Armstrong (@brian_armstrong) July 12, 2025 Armstrong gifted the bottle of tequila to the security team. Coinbase founder and CEO Brian Armstrong says the latest memecoin frenzy is overwhelming the top US-based crypto exchange. Armstrong acknowledges that Solana is experiencing transactional delays on Coinbase amid a high volume surge in the trading of memecoins launched on the SOL network. In response to one customer complaining of delays on the social media platform X, Armstrong says, “Team is working hard on scaling our Solana infra now – lots of Solana activity last few days, we were not anticipating this level of surge.” Armstrong also responds to another customer complaining they’ve been waiting two days so far for their transfer of SOL to a private wallet to go through. “It’s a scaling challenge keeping up with activity on Solana chain (which surged lately), not solvency. Customer funds are 100% backed and audited periodically by Deloitte. Team is working hard to resolve it.” According to blockchain data aggregator DefiLl...

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong goes on the offensive amidst Binance legal woes

Major Binance rival Coinbase took advantage of the problems of its competitor to alert users on the need to regulate the crypto market. According to Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, the need for transparency and clarity in crypto is more greater than ever before. These principles, he added, were critical in providing Coinbase regulatory and legal compliance departments that have made Coinbase unique since its founding in 2012. Since the founding of Coinbase back in 2012 we have taken a long-term view. I knew we needed to embrace compliance to become a generational company that stood the test of time. We got the licenses, hired the compliance and legal teams, and made it clear our brand was about trust… — Brian Armstrong ️ (@brian_armstrong) November 21, 2023 Armstrong noted that Coinbase, unlike Binance, is a public company.
